I discovered the rocks of the California coast one day when the light did not seem right for shooting my usual subjects.  The rocks are fascinating to me because they have colors and patterns that I do not see anywhere else.  Their patterns reflect their character as  sedimentary rocks, in layers with intrusions.  The layers are often different colors, reflecting the various materials that washed down to the coast over millions of years.  In addition, every year, new material washes out from between the layers, and colors the layers differently from the year before. This process allows me to go to the same places, year after year, and capture wonderful images that bear little or no resemblance to the images from previous years.
